The Dutch driving theory exam
The Dutch driving theory exam is regarded as one of the toughest (but one of the highest quality!) theory exams in the world. However, with efficient teaching, revision, and practice, you’ll find it easy to pass.
Your theory test is taken on a computer at a Dutch CBR centre of your choice. During the test, you’ll prove you can recognise hazards, know the traffic rules, and that you know how to act on Dutch roads.
The theory exam has three parts:
Once you’ve passed the theory exam (gefeliciteerd!), you’re allowed to take your practical driving test. Passed that too? You’re ready to hit the road!

Yes! At Theory College Netherlands, you benefit from our unique Pass Guarantee. We’re so confident in our methods that in the (unlikely) event that you fail your CBR exam, we’ll refund you the CBR exam fee! Conditions apply.
What topics are covered in the CBR theory test?
The Dutch driving theory test has three main sections: Hazard Perception, Traffic Knowledge, and Traffic Insight.
Hazard Perception is a timed test where you are presented with a visual scenario and must react in just eight seconds by either slowing down, braking, or doing nothing.
Traffic Knowledge tests your knowledge of the Dutch road rules with questions like, “What does this sign mean?”
Traffic Insight tests your application of the Dutch road rules, asking you to apply the rules in specific situations.
How do I book the CBR theory test, and what are the costs?
Ready for your test? You can book your CBR theory exam at mijn.cbr.nl using your DigiD. If you already have a driving school, your school can book the test on your behalf.
Can I reschedule my CBR theory test?
You can reschedule your CBR theory test up to three times with at least seven days’ notice. Within seven days of your exam, you can only reschedule to an earlier time slot (if one is available). On the day of your exam, you cannot reschedule.
